A Contemptuous Insult - Herron

Commenting on the CGP proposals Councillor Stephen Herron branded the report "a contemptuous insult".

The Banbridge councillor stated:

"How any right thinking person could equate an innocent person murdered in a bomb or gun attack with the evil terrorist who plotted and carried out the attack is beyond comprehension, and the fact that a leading clergyman like Robin Eames who has witnessed first hand the sufferings of many within his own community can be party to such a contemptuous proposal just beggars belief. Where is his sense of justice and of right and wrong?

“To offer a family £12000 as some sort of token of recognition of their loss is one thing, but to turn round and give the same to the family of the IRA terrorist who murdered their loved one, is to reward and legitimise that terrorist’s evil deeds. I view these recommendations as a contemptuous insult to the families of innocent civilians and security force personnel who were murdered by terrorists.

"It is recommended on page 132 of the report that after the five year mandate of the proposed Legacy Commission has ended a "line might be drawn", therefore ending the possibility of a victim’s family ever seeing the murderer of their loved one brought to justice. On the same page it says, "many families may need to adjust their expectations of criminal justice." To me that is double-speak for amnesty! Justice is nothing more and nothing less than the victims of terrorism are entitled to. However it is clear that the Eames/Bradley agenda is to move away from the criminal justice system, to a mere gathering of information under immunity. Under Eames/Bradley the pursuit of justice for genuine victims will be abandoned and the records of terrorists in relation to employment will be wiped clean.

“It is high time that those within the NI Assembly who know better moved to overturn the definition of "victim" under the terms of the 2006 Victims and Survivors Order. That would, in some measure at least, remove the legitimacy that the CGP claim for their perverse terminology.”
