DUP claims on victims disingenuous - McConnell
Responding to DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds who claimed the his party is working to overturn the definition of victim established during Direct Rule, TUV chairman Ivor McConnell said:
"The 2006 Victims and Survivors Order employs the same definition of victim as that which Lord Eames and Dennis Bradley appear to be contemplating (i.e. it puts the terrorist killed by his own bomb in the same category as an innocent victim).
"The claim by Nigel Dodds that the DUP are working at Stormont to overturn this flawed piece of legislation is totally disingenuous. Due to the absolute veto that Sinn Fein/IRA have over everything that happens at Stormont this is impossible – as Mr Dodds very well knows.
"Having twinned themselves with the political wing of a terrorist organisation the DUP are unable to deliver on this most fundamental of issues. If I am wrong I invite Mr Dodds to clarify how he proposes to achieve his laudable objective.
"The uncomfortable truth which Mr Dodds wishes to conceal is that his own party leader as joint First Minister alongside Martin McGuinness heads an office which operates under the constraints of this definition.
"I would suggest that that devolution which cannot deliver change to the 2006 Order isn’t worth having."
