Allister deconstructs DUP hypocrisy

Jim Allister MEP

Speaking to a public meeting in Portadown TUV Leader Jim Allister QC MEP told the audience that the upcoming European election would be a roll call of Unionists opposed to Sinn Fein rule.  As the only candidate opposed to terrorists in government, he alone could claim genuinely to be opposed to Sinn Fein.

"Others" he said "pretend, but in truth they are promoters of the Belfast Agreement and its iniquitous mandatory coalition system which installed IRA/Sinn Fein at the heart of government. You can't make Sinn Fein your partner in government, but pretend at the polls they are your enemy. Patently they are not, they are your ally."

Observing that while he abhorred everything David Trimble had done to broker and introduce the Belfast Agreement, he had to accept that the Ulster Unionists had been more honest than his former party, the DUP, who till they got to a position of dominance pretended opposition to the Belfast Agreement and then, when they were the lead party, traded principle for power, giving us IRA/Sinn Fein right at the heart and top of government.

"This was the politics of power-grab and expediency", declared the MEP. "How else could you explain Peter Robinson's transition from describing McGuinness as 'the Bogside Butcher' to his buddy in government?"

Continuing the TUV MEP said, "Unionism was always built on principle, not expediency. When career politicians take over an organisation the first casualty is principle. Mendacity and deception follow naturally. Hence, the fatuous spin that to stop Sinn Fein you should vote for the Party which gifted them the highest office in the land.

As I have said before, the moment Diane Dodds put up her hand to welcome IRA/Sinn Fein into government - along, to my great disappointment, with David Simpson MP - was the moment she, and he, surrendered the ground of genuine opposition to Sinn Fein. What she now gives us is the sham fight of deception. I can look every Unionist in the eye and mean it when I say my mission, whatever the cost, is to resist Sinn Fein 24/7 and get them out of government."
