McKillop: Time to Relegate Illegal Dumping to the Dustbin

TUV Cllr Sharon McKillop has demanded that local councils seek innovative solutions to deal with illegal dumping.

At this week’s Moyle Council meeting Cllr McKillop proposed that the council consider providing a free trailer-disposal service to all people over 65 years old or in receipt of benefits.

Commenting on the proposal Cllr McKillop highlighted the costs associated with fly-dumping she stated:

“Unfortunately fly-dumping continues to plague many local councils. For example fly-dumping within the Dundarave area of Moyle has continually suffered from illegal dumping.

As a result of illegal dumping a previous clean-up of the Dundarave area cost the taxpayer approximately £100,000. I have therefore proposed that the Council offer a free trailer-disposal service to all people over 65 and to anyone in receipt of benefits. While this proposal would help ensure that people are encouraged to dispose of unwanted items responsibly it is not the only measure required. I have therefore challenged the council to consider innovative solutions to further resolve the problems of illegal dumping and I am also willing to explore other measures that could resolve the problem.

TUV believe that illegal dumping not only results in costs to ratepayers but also has an adverse impact on the environment and appearance of local areas. It is therefore a priority that councils act to ensure illegal dumping is literally relegated to the dustbin.”
