McKillop Questions Cost of Bilingual Signage

At last week’s meeting of Moyle Council Councillors were informed that the cost of erecting bilingual signage for a street with only fifteen properties would amount to £249.45.
The costs included a street survey, removal of the existing signage and the erecting of a new nameplate in both English and Irish.
Responding to the costs involved TUV Councillor Sharon McKillop stated:
“I am shocked at the cost involved in replacing the sign. At a time of economic recession when people are struggling to pay their bills I do have to wonder what logic there is for such unnecessary signage.
Furthermore when Councillors were asked if anyone could accurately pronounce the Irish name for this street only one Councillor could oblige. If the Council Chamber is an accurate reflection of the people they claim to represent then one can only conclude that the signage is only understood by a small minority while the excessive cost must still be met by the majority.”
