Statement by TUV Fermanagh and South Tyrone candidate Alex Elliott:

“News that a member of the Northern Ireland Executive has provided a reference for convicted terrorist Gerry McGeough should hardly come as a surprise given the pedigree of some of those who currently occupy places round the cabinet table in Stormont.

“However, it is yet another telling reminder that Sinn Fein/IRA remain wedded to terrorism. Additionally, it gives the lie to the notion that there is a world of difference between the Republicans who have been elevated to the heart of government by the DUP and UUP and so-called dissidents.

“When McGeough was first arrested Michelle Gildernew immediately called for his release. Now a member of the Executive has written him a reference!

“An executive which includes people willing to say and do such things is one which is in hoc with the forces of terror. I look forward to providing the Unionists of Fermanagh and South Tyrone with an opportunity to register their disgust at this situation and demand a positive, democratic form of government at Stormont in the upcoming election.”
